The Technology Giant That Shaped the Computer Age
Today, it may not seem unusual for a company known for its technological achievements to also be firmly committed to the importance of excellent design. From smartphones and laptops to electronic devices and automobiles, we often associate high technology with elegant design. However, this was not always the case. As a pioneer in design, IBM placed great importance on research and development in the field of design.
When technology history is mentioned today, names such as Apple, Microsoft, or Intel usually come to mind. However, IBM (International Business Machines), one of the companies that laid the foundations of the modern computer industry, is one of the most important players in the digital world with a history of more than 100 years.
Why is IBM so important?
The development from punched cards to global technology leadership began when Herman Hollerith founded the Tabulating Machine Company, which forms the most fundamental origin of IBM, in Washington, D.C. in 1896. This was based on Hollerith’s invention of the punched-card tabulating machine, which he developed for the 1890 census.
In 1911, the company was established as the Computing-Tabulating-Recording Company (CTR) through the merger of several companies, and in 1924 it was renamed International Business Machines (IBM), marking the birth of IBM.
By 1928, IBM introduced the 80-column punched card system. This system was used as the global standard for data processing for decades. Banks, government institutions, and large companies began managing millions of records with IBM systems. During this period, IBM was not merely a company that produced machines; it was a technology leader that shaped the future of data management.
Transition to the Computer Age
As electronic technologies developed rapidly in the late 1940s, IBM realized that the future of mechanical systems was limited. The company entered the field of electronic computing by taking part in pioneering computer projects such as the Harvard Mark project.
In 1951, when its competitor UNIVAC released one of the world’s first commercial computers, it attracted great attention. As a result, IBM feared falling behind, increased its investments, and made a strong entry into the computer industry.
IBM 650 and the Commercial Computer Revolution
Introduced in 1953, the IBM 650 became one of the most successful early computers in the world. This system, which automated processes such as accounting, payroll, and inventory management, demonstrated that computers were indispensable not only for scientists but also for the business world. The success of the IBM 650 marked the beginning of the company’s leadership in the computer market.
The IBM 650 was not a microprocessor but a complete computer system. Announced by IBM in 1953, it was the world’s first mass-produced commercial computer. Its full name was the “IBM 650 Magnetic Drum Data-Processing Machine”. Known in its time as an electronic brain, this system is one of the most important milestones in computer history and was also the first computer to arrive in Turkey.
The Invention of the Hard Disk (1956)
It is one of IBM’s greatest achievements in technology history. In 1956, IBM developed the RAMAC 305, the world’s first hard disk drive. This system, which could store approximately 5 MB of data, formed the basis of all hard disk technologies used today.
IBM System 360: The Project That Changed Computer History
In 1964, IBM introduced System 360, one of the most important computer projects in history. Thanks to this system, computers of different sizes could run the same software and use the same architecture. Many technology historians regard System 360 as one of the starting points of the modern computer industry.
SQL and Databases
IBM researchers pioneered the implementation of relational database theory in the 1970s. IBM made major contributions to the development of the SQL language used today.
Barcode Technology
IBM played an important role in the widespread adoption of barcode systems used in supermarkets today. The first commercial barcode scanning transaction was carried out in 1974 using IBM technologies.
IBM and the Personal Computer Revolution
In 1981, the IBM PC was released. This product formed the foundation of the desktop computers we use today.
In the IBM PC:
- Intel’s 8088 microprocessor was used as the processor.
- Microsoft’s MS-DOS software was chosen as the operating system.
These decisions accelerated the rise of Intel and Microsoft while also setting the standards for the personal computer industry.
Is Lenovo IBM?
In 2005, Lenovo purchased IBM’s personal computer division for approximately 1.75 billion dollars. The China-based company Lenovo was the world’s fourth-largest computer manufacturer in 2009, after HP, Dell, and Acer, with a market share of 28.6%.
It currently maintains its position as the world leader in personal computers with a 26% share.
IBM’s Supercomputers
IBM is an important player in the world of technology not only in the past but also today.
In 1997, IBM’s Deep Blue supercomputer made history by defeating world chess champion Garry Kasparov.
In 2011, the artificial intelligence system called Watson surpassed human competitors on the quiz show Jeopardy!. This success is considered one of the milestones that paved the way for commercial applications of artificial intelligence.
A Pioneer in Design and Corporate Identity
IBM has attracted attention not only with its technological innovations but also with the importance it placed on design. The corporate design program created under the leadership of Eliot Noyes during the era of Thomas J. Watson Jr. was a first in the technology sector.
The foundations of many corporate brand management and industrial design approaches used today were laid by IBM.
Conclusion
The technologies developed by IBM are too numerous to count. These include the hard disk, SQL database research, the barcode system, and DRAM memory studies.
In the roadmap it published in June 2025, IBM stated that error rates are the biggest obstacle facing quantum computers and announced that the computer called Quantum Starling, which it plans to build by 2029, aims to become the world’s first large-scale fault-tolerant quantum computer. The company states that this system will be able to solve problems far more complex than today’s quantum computers.
IBM is not merely a computer company. With innovations ranging from punched cards to hard disks, from mainframes to personal computers, and from artificial intelligence to quantum computers, it is one of the most influential institutions in technology history. The technologies developed by IBM form the foundation of the computers, data centers, and many digital services we use today. For this reason, IBM is regarded as one of the unseen architects of the modern information age.
Today, IBM continues its work in cloud computing, quantum computers, and artificial intelligence, and in its second century it continues to shape the future of the technology world.
