Why did California’s Santa Clara Valley become the technology center of the world instead of New York, Chicago, or Boston?
The question is why Fairchild Semiconductor was founded in Silicon Valley. There is no single reason for this; many historical, economic, and scientific factors came together.
Today, Silicon Valley is not only the center of semiconductor companies, but also home to the world’s largest software, internet, artificial intelligence, and hardware companies.
Why did William Shockley choose California?
It all started with William Shockley. Shockley was a scientist known for his work in the development of the transistor. After receiving the Nobel Prize, he decided to establish his own company, Shockley Semiconductor Laboratory, in 1956.
Why California?
- His mother lived in California.
- He had spent part of his childhood around Palo Alto.
- He knew the region well and wanted to live there.
In other words, the first spark was largely born from Shockley’s personal preference.
What makes Stanford University special?
One of the main reasons was Stanford University. In the 1940s and 1950s, Stanford had gone beyond being a traditional university. Engineering professor Frederick Terman encouraged his students to start their own companies and built strong links between the university and industry.
- He opened laboratories to industrial companies.
- He provided space for technology companies near the campus.
- He supported the commercialization of academic research.
As a result, the region became very attractive to young engineers.
The presence of qualified engineers in Silicon Valley

For example, a person in Silicon Valley could leave in the morning without even telling their spouse and start working for a different company. At the same time, while socializing in shared spaces such as cafés, bars, and restaurants, people could meet engineers working at rival companies and discuss technical problems. This allowed technological knowledge to leak and almost remain suspended in the air, leading to a collective explosion of innovation that went beyond the boundaries of individual companies and caused the sector to grow at a dizzying speed.
Entrepreneurship and investment culture
When Fairchild became successful, many of its employees founded their own companies. During the same period, venture capital investors also began to concentrate in the region. In the region;

The company’s goal was to make silicon-based transistors, which were newly emerging at the time, more reliable and suitable for mass production. In a short time, it became one of the most innovative companies in the world in the fields of transistors and integrated circuits.

- The widespread adoption of silicon-based transistors,
- The development of integrated circuit manufacturing techniques,
- Laying the foundations of modern semiconductor manufacturing processes.
How was Fairchild Semiconductor founded?
The story of the company’s founding begins with Nobel Prize-winning physicist William Shockley.
In 1956, Shockley received the Nobel Prize in Physics for his contributions to the development of the transistor. That same year, he founded a company called Shockley Semiconductor Laboratory in California and hired young and talented engineers.
However, Shockley’s management style was highly authoritarian. He did not trust his employees, made decisions alone, and frequently changed the direction of research. This created serious unrest within the company.
Eventually, eight young engineers decided to leave together.
“Traitorous Eight”
The eight engineers who left Shockley are known in technology history as the “Traitorous Eight.”
These people were:
- Robert Noyce
- Gordon Moore
- Jean Hoerni
- Julius Blank
- Victor Grinich
- Jay Last
- Eugene Kleiner
- Sheldon Roberts
Because Shockley saw them as “traitors,” this name eventually went down in history.
The book “Troublemakers: Silicon Valley’s Coming of Age” by Leslie Berlin is a well-known history and business book that explains Silicon Valley’s period of maturation between 1969 and 1983 and how the modern technology world was built.
Leslie Berlin, a historian at the Stanford University Silicon Valley Archives, focuses in her book not only on famous figures but also on the stories of seven key and extraordinary people in the background who changed the world, whom she calls “troublemakers.”
These eight engineers had good ideas, but they did not have the capital to start a company. Entrepreneur Arthur Rock stepped in to help them find investors. During his search for investment, Rock met with Sherman Fairchild, the owner of the New York-based Fairchild Camera and Instrument company.
Sherman Fairchild agreed to invest in the project, and the newly founded company took the name of its main investor, becoming Fairchild Semiconductor. In other words, although the company was founded by the eight engineers, its financing was provided by Fairchild Camera and Instrument.
Why did Fairchild become so important?
Fairchild was not only a successful manufacturer; it also pioneered many innovations in semiconductor technology. Fairchild Semiconductor’s greatest legacy is the new companies founded by its own employees. The most famous of these is Intel, founded in 1968.
Robert Noyce and Gordon Moore left Fairchild and founded Intel.
In addition, engineers originating from Fairchild later played roles in the founding of many important technology companies such as:

- National Semiconductor
- LSI Logic
For this reason, Fairchild Semiconductor is often referred to as the “mother of Silicon Valley.”
Although Fairchild Semiconductor, founded in 1957, is no longer as powerful as it once was, the companies founded by the engineers it trained made Silicon Valley the technology center of the world. Apple, Google, NVIDIA, Intel, AMD, and hundreds of other technology companies grew within the same ecosystem where the entrepreneurship culture initiated by Fairchild developed.

Why has none of them been as successful as Silicon Valley?
Silicon Valley’s success does not come only from companies. The fact that several elements came together in the same place and over many years made it unique:
- Strong universities such as Stanford University and the University of California, Berkeley,
- The semiconductor ecosystem that began with Fairchild Semiconductor,
- The growth of pioneering companies such as Intel, Apple, and Google in the region,
- The concentration of the world’s largest venture capital funds there,
- An international workforce that attracts talented engineers,
- An entrepreneurial culture that sees failure as a natural part of the learning process.
For these reasons, although successful technology clusters have emerged in different parts of the world, Silicon Valley is still considered the strongest example of a global technology, investment, and innovation ecosystem.
