THE COMPANY THAT BROUGHT TECHNOLOGY INTO PEOPLE’S LIVES

Apple is regarded today as one of the world’s most influential technology companies. The company has developed important products in many fields, including computers, smartphones, tablets, digital music, wearable technology, and processor design. However, explaining Apple’s importance in the history of technology solely through the devices it has produced is not sufficient.

Apple’s main success has often been bringing together technologies previously developed by other researchers or companies and turning them into products that are easier, more understandable, and more functional from the user’s perspective.

For this reason, Apple’s story is not merely the story of a company that invents new technologies. It is also the story of existing technologies being reinterpreted and made part of daily life.

The Emergence of Apple

Apple Computer was founded on April 1, 1976, by Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, and Ronald Wayne.

The period in which Apple emerged was a time when computer technology was undergoing a major transformation. In the 1940s and 1950s, computers were large, expensive machines that could be used only by government institutions, universities, and large companies.

From the 1950s onward, the development of the transistor, followed by the emergence of integrated circuits and the development of microprocessors, enabled computers to become progressively smaller and less expensive. One of the important centers of these developments was Silicon Valley in California.

The technology ecosystem created by companies such as Fairchild Semiconductor and Intel contributed to the formation of the electronic infrastructure necessary for the personal computer revolution to emerge. Apple arose within this environment.

The Beginning of the Personal Computer Idea

The complementary qualities of Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs played an important role in Apple’s founding. Steve Wozniak was an electronics engineer. He was highly skilled in the electronic architecture and circuit design of computers. Steve Jobs, on the other hand, focused on how technology should be presented to the user. These two approaches shaped Apple’s character.

Apple’s first computer, the Apple I, appeared in 1976. At that time, electronic kits and parts were sold to computer enthusiasts. One of the important characteristics of the Apple I was that it carried the idea of making the computer a more usable and ready-made system. However, the product that enabled Apple to grow in a real sense was the Apple II.

Apple II and the Personal Computer Revolution

Released in 1977, the Apple II played an important role in the spread of personal computers. The success of the Apple II was not based solely on its processor or electronic circuits.

The computer brought together features such as;

  • Keyboard,
  • Display,
  • Storage,
  • Color graphics,
  • Sound,
  • Software

and offered the user a more integrated experience.

Apple developed an important strategy here. Instead of selling technologies one by one, turning them into a product that the user could understand.

This approach would also leave its mark on Apple’s next 50 years.

Xerox PARC and the Graphical User Interface

One of the most debated topics in Apple’s technological history is the graphical user interface.

In the 1970s, Xerox’s PARC research center was conducting important work on the future of computers.

Technologies such as the graphical user interface, windows, icons, and the mouse were among the important ideas developed or researched there.

Apple engineers saw some of the work at Xerox PARC and were influenced by these ideas.

However, rather than directly copying these research technologies, what Apple did was make them part of a computer product intended for a broader group of users.

This process played an important role in the emergence of the Macintosh.

Macintosh

In 1984, Apple released the Macintosh. One of the most important features of the Macintosh was its graphical user interface. The user could give commands to the computer not only by typing commands, but also through windows, icons, menus, and the Mouse.

This approach made computer use more understandable. Here, an important characteristic of Apple in the history of technology appeared once again: Apple redesigned previously developed technologies from the perspective of user experience.

Steve Jobs Leaves Apple

Steve Jobs left Apple in 1985. Jobs’s departure became an important turning point in Apple’s history. Jobs later founded a company called NeXT. Although NeXT computers did not achieve commercial success as great as Apple’s, the software technologies developed by the company would later become highly important to Apple. This is one of the interesting examples in Apple’s history:

The foundations of some technologies that would be used in Apple’s future were laid during the period when Jobs had left Apple.

Steve Jobs Returns to Apple

Steve Jobs returned to Apple in 1997. At that time, Apple had a complex product structure with a large number of products and models. One of the first things Jobs did was simplify the product strategy.

Apple began developing fewer products and placing greater importance on the design, use, and marketing of those products. One of the most important examples of this was the iMac.

Released in 1998, the iMac showed that a computer was not merely a technical device but could also be a designed consumer product.

iPod

Redesigning Digital Music

Apple released the iPod in 2001. Apple’s technological approach can also be clearly seen here. Digital music and MP3 technology were not invented by Apple. The MP3 format and portable digital music devices already existed before Apple.

What Apple did was bring together a hardware + software + music store + synchronization system.

The iPod and iTunes worked together to make buying music, managing it on a computer, and transferring it to a portable device easier.

This model later formed the foundation of the ecosystem approach Apple would use across all its products.

iPhone

Combining Existing Technologies

Apple introduced the iPhone in 2007. Smartphones existed before the iPhone. Touchscreens, mobile internet, digital cameras, and portable computer technologies had also been developed before Apple.

What Apple did was combine these technologies in a single device.

  • Mobile phone,
  • Internet connection,
  • Touchscreen,
  • Camera,
  • Music player,
  • Web browser,
  • GPS,
  • And most importantly, it combined technologies such as the application store into a single user experience.

For this reason, it is more accurate to explain the iPhone’s success not as “it invented the smartphone”, but as “it redefined the smartphone.”

App Store and the Mobile Software Economy

The opening of the App Store in 2008 further increased the iPhone’s impact. Apple was no longer merely a company that sold devices. Developers could develop applications for the iPhone, and these applications could reach millions of users. Developer companies and individuals found a space for themselves and pioneered the creation of more applications.

This model played an important role in the development of the mobile ecosystem containing the many applications we use today, from mobile banking to social media and from games to navigation.

iPad

A New Space Between the Computer and the Phone

Apple released the iPad in 2010. The idea of the tablet computer was not invented by Apple. Different companies had previously developed tablet computers. However, by bringing together a touchscreen, a mobile operating system, an application store, and powerful hardware, the iPad enabled tablet computers to reach broad audiences. Apple once again applied the same approach here:

Rather than inventing a new technology, turning existing technologies into a product that people would want to use.

Apple Watch and Wearable Technology

Apple later entered the field of wearable technology.

With the Apple Watch, sensors, wireless connectivity, mobile processors, display technologies, and health and fitness measurements were combined in a single small device. The Apple Watch, which has now become the choice of all users who exercise and read books, proved that it was wearable technology.

This product became one of the indicators of Apple’s transformation from a computer and phone company into a broader technology company.

Apple Silicon

Taking Control of the Hardware

One of Apple’s most important technological moves in recent years has been processor design. For many years, Apple used processors from different manufacturers in Macintosh computers. It first went through the Motorola/PowerPC period and later used Intel processors. In 2020, Apple transitioned to its own designed Apple Silicon processors. This process, which began with M1, continued with M2, M3, M4, and subsequent generations. The important development here is not merely that the processor is faster.

Apple could now control the integration between the processor + operating system + computer hardware + software to a much greater degree.

This is an important stage in Apple’s technology development strategy.

Lessons We Can Draw from Steve Jobs’s Life

Steve Jobs’s role at Apple was not limited to being CEO. He had a strong influence on product development, design, marketing, and company culture. Some events in his life are seen today as important lessons in the worlds of entrepreneurship and technology.

1- Thinking differently

Apple’s Think Different approach is one of the most important expressions summarizing Jobs’s way of thinking. Instead of making existing products slightly better, Jobs preferred to question how people solved a problem.

2- Starting again after failure

Jobs’s departure from Apple in 1985 was one of the important failures in his career. However, he later founded NeXT and also gained important experience during the Pixar period. When he returned to Apple, he brought these experiences with him. For this reason, one of the most important lessons from Jobs’s life is: “Failure can sometimes be not the end of the road, but the beginning of another road.”

3- Connecting the dots afterward

One of the important ideas Jobs described while talking about himself and telling us how to look at things in his 2005 speech at Stanford University was how events experienced in the past connect with one another in the future. A person may not know in advance how everything they do will be useful in the future. However, when looking back, they may see that different experiences complement one another. This idea carries an important message, especially in terms of technology and entrepreneurship:

Every experience may have value in the future.

4- Thinking beyond the product’s technical specifications

In Jobs’s approach at Apple, the technical specifications of the product were not the only important consideration. It was also important;

  • How it looked,
  • How it was used,
  • How the user felt,
  • How it worked with other products.

For this reason, an important part of Apple’s success resulted from bringing engineering and design together.

Apple’s Technological Legacy

When looking at Apple’s history of nearly half a century, it can be seen that the company’s success is not based on a single technology. Apple brought together the microprocessor, graphical user interface, internet, digital music, touchscreen, mobile communication, GPS, wireless connectivity, and advanced processor technologies at different times and transformed them into products that could be used in people’s daily lives.

Apple’s most important characteristic was that, rather than asking “Is this technology possible?”,

it said, “How can this technology be used more easily by people?”

The journey that began with the Apple I in 1976 extended to personal computers with the Apple II, the graphical user interface with the Macintosh, digital music with the iPod, mobile computing with the iPhone, the touch-based computing experience with the iPad, and highly integrated computer architecture with Apple Silicon.

For this reason, defining Apple’s place in the history of technology solely as “a company that produces computers or phones” is insufficient.

Apple is one of the companies that brings different technologies together and makes them a natural part of people’s daily lives.

To express it through Steve Jobs’s approach, Apple’s story is not so much the story of technology itself as it is the story of how technology meets people.
